Furry Friends: How Dogs Can Change Your Kids' Lives
When I was young, my parents always had dogs and cats, and I cared for my rabbit, stick insects, and goldfish. It was an incredible experience growing up with all these animals, and I'm lucky my parents let me take care of them.
Today all my siblings have a dog, and when my brother told me about the impact their dog will have on the life of his newborn, it made me think back to my childhood and how much I loved my parents' dog and cat.
Pets are essential to many families and for a good reason. They bring joy, companionship, and love into our lives. Dogs can have a profound impact on your kids' lives. They become part of the family. If you're not convinced yet, or perhaps you're thinking of getting a dog but your partner is against it, here are some reasons why it can be a great addition to your family.
I'm not here to convince you to get a dog. I'm just sharing the benefits:
Companionship
Dogs are great companions for kids. They provide unconditional love and support and are always there to play and snuggle. Having a dog can be a lifeline for kids who may feel lonely or isolated. Although I had three siblings, I enjoyed having my dog around. He made me feel comforted whenever I needed it.
Responsibility
Owning a dog teaches kids to be responsible. They have to feed, walk, and care for their pet, which helps them develop a sense of accountability and self-reliance. When your kids are old enough, you can create a walking schedule and let everyone walk by turns.
Exercise
Dogs need exercise, and so do kids. Walking or playing with a dog can help kids get outside and move. This is especially important in today's world, where screens can dominate our lives.
It's also great for us, parents, to get some movement after dinner; the dog needs to be walked.
Emotional Support
Pets, especially dogs, can provide emotional support to kids. They can help reduce stress and anxiety and give a sense of calm and comfort. It can be particularly beneficial for kids struggling with mental health issues. Did you know that you will release oxytocin when cuddling with your dog? That's the same (love) hormone moms make when interacting with their newborns. Just try it out for yourself!
Learning Opportunities
Owning a dog can provide a wealth of learning opportunities for kids. They can learn about dog behavior, training, grooming, and the responsibility of pet ownership. If you want to help them develop a love of learning and curiosity about the world around them, a dog can be great for that.

Pets, especially dogs, can profoundly impact your kids' lives. They provide companionship, teach responsibility, promote exercise, offer emotional support, and provide learning opportunities. If you're considering getting a pet, a dog might be an excellent choice for your family.
Be realistic; when considering welcoming a dog for your family, you must understand what it entails and if it fits into your family lifestyle. Dogs need to be seriously taken care of. It's not something you choose to do for a week and then suddenly stop. They need your care for years, sometimes decades, and you pay the price for it too. But it's worth it if you're a dog lover like me!
